“CHANGE PROGRAM NEWS
23 December 2009
I am writing today to update you on our plans to
implement the new income tax processing system as part of
our change program.
While we have made significant progress, there are some
areas to focus on before we implement the new system. We
will carefully track our progress between now and the end
of January.
With you and your clients firmly in mind, we will only
deploy a system when we are confident it is ready.
As we have previously said, we plan to temporarily stop
processing income tax returns in the quiet January period
while we move from the current system to the new one.
This is based on our plan to start processing income tax
returns in our new system from 8 February 2010. However,
the final decision will not be taken on this until the
end of January 2010.
Nevertheless, until we finalise our position it is likely
that there will be limited access to portal information
during January and no access over the Australia Day
period - from midnight Friday, 22 January to 6am
Wednesday, 27 January 2010.
This is the best window of opportunity we have to
implement the new system as many of you will be taking a
well-earned break and your industry representatives have
told us this is generally a quiet time for your
practices.
If your clients would normally lodge a business activity
statement in February and expect a refund we also suggest
you to lodge statements by 11 January to minimise the
chance of any possible delay.
Implementing the new system carries significant risks. If
we believe the risks are too great and we aren't
confident of a successful deployment we will defer the
new system until we are sure it can be implemented with
less disruption. I will keep you informed of any change
to our plans.
Visit 'Change program essentials' at
www.ato.gov.au/changeprogram on our website for more
information. The website contains information on
specifics around how you may be affected, including
frequently asked questions and updates.
Thank you for your support and understanding as we
implement the biggest information technology release we
have ever undertaken.”
